The Sarawak Education Department (better known by its Malay abbreviation JPNS) said in a statement tonight that the decision to close the schools was made based on continuous monitoring and Air Pollutant Index (API) readings reaching the very unhealthy level at 8 pm today.

“The temporary closure of 54 primary schools involving 22,476 students and nine secondary schools involving 17,268 students under the Bintulu and Tatau/Sebauh PPDs (District Education Offices) will be from Sept 7 to 11, 2026,” the statement said.
