KUALA LUMPUR: Affordable housing programmes are more than a way to bridge the housing affordability gap— they also help young Malaysians build wealth, improve social mobility and achieve long-term economic stability.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Associate Professor (property economics) Dr Muhammad Najib Razali said state housing schemes such as Rumah Selangorku help address market gaps, as private developers often focus on higher-profit segments beyond the reach of many low- and middle-income households.
"These programmes also support asset-based welfare theory, which views homeownership as a mechanism for wealth accumulation, financial security and long-term social mobility. By enabling young households to own homes earlier, these schemes contribute to broader economic and social stability."
