Karate double bronze gives Malaysia ideal start at Asian Games
KUALA LUMPUR: It was double joy for Malaysia in karate as H. Sureeya Sankar joined K. Thevendran on the podium with a bronze in men's kumite, opening the country's medal account at the Asian Games in Toyohashi City today.
Sureeya recovered from the disappointment of losing to Qatar's Abdelrahman Abdelhamid in the below-60kg semi-final, bouncing back strongly to annihilate Vietnam's Chu Van Duc 10-2 at the Toyohashi Gymnasium in Aichi and deliver Malaysia's second medal at the Games.
The two-time SEA Games champion began his campaign with a 5-0 demolition of Bangladesh's Siam Hosen before coming from behind to overcome Rayan Gurbanmyradov 3-2 in the quarter-final.
