No more 30% Bumi equity in privately owned education centres: MOE

PUTRAJAYA — The minimum 30 per cent Bumiputera equity ownership in private limited companies operating private educational institutions under the Education Ministry's (MOE) purview, is no longer a requirement. MOE said this decision was reached following discussions with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). "This adjustment was made to meet the current needs of the education sector and ensure participation remains open to all parties wishing to contribute to the nation's educational development," MOE said in a statement today, Bernama reports The ministry said it noted the concerns raised regarding the 30 per cent Bumiputera equity requirement for specific educational institutions owned by private limited companies. The 30 per cent ruling which would affect ownership of private tuition centres, is contained in the Private Education Institutions Policy Book published in 2006 , though it appears to not have been enforced. The guidelines for tuition centres were introduced during the administration of the fifth Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, when Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein was Education Minister.
