Kuching school axe attack probe completed, police submit papers to DPP
Police have submitted investigation papers on the alleged attack by a 16-year-old student to the deputy public prosecutor, with further action pending a forensic psychiatric report and review of the evidence
KUALA LUMPUR — Police have completed their investigation into an alleged axe attack on a teacher by a 16-year-old student at a private school in Kuching, submitting the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor yesterday. Sarawak acting police commissioner Saifullizan Ishak said the next course of action would depend on the prosecution’s review of the investigation papers and the findings of a forensic psychiatric assessment of the teenager, Harian Metro reported. “The forensic psychiatric report is important for determining the suspect’s mental state at the time of the incident, including whether he acted consciously or was out of control,” he said at a press conference at the Sarawak police headquarters in Kuching. Saifullizan said preliminary investigations found that the teenager had purchased the axe online. Police are still analysing his mobile phone and computer to gather information related to the Oct 21 incident. The suspect remains in hospital, where he is receiving treatment and undergoing psychiatric and medical assessments. Police have found no evidence that the teenager was bullied before the incident, Saifullizan said. On allegations that online games or certain content might have influenced the teenager, he said investigations were ongoing and police would not draw conclusions without credible evidence. The 42-year-old teacher suffered a cut to her left hand, but the injury did not affect any muscles or bones. She was discharged after receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kuching. Saifullizan said police had recorded statements from 38 witnesses, including students, teachers, security guards, medical experts and the suspect’s parents. The teenager was arrested following the incident, which he allegedly livestreamed on social media. He was also reportedly carrying firecrackers. The case was investigated for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon and offences involving the handling of explosives.
