For decades, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was seen as a paediatric problem, a virus that filled wards with wheezing infants each monsoon season. But RSV does not spare the elderly.
In Malaysia, RSV accounts for 16.3 per cent of viral community-acquired pneumonia in adults, with a median age of 68 years and a median hospital stay of six days. The case fatality rate for adults over 65 is 17 times that of children under five.
