Court orders Murray Hunter to pay RM50,000 damages to MRCB over Shah Alam Stadium articles

KUALA LUMPUR – Blogger Murray Hunter has been ordered by the Shah Alam High Court to pay RM50,000 in damages to Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) after the court found him liable for conspiring with activist Abdul Razak Ismail in publishing a series of articles linked to the redevelopment of the Shah Alam Stadium. Judicial commissioner Shoba Rajah Dorai Rajah also granted an injunction against Hunter and ordered him to pay RM10,000 in costs following her ruling on Aug 18, FMT reported. Hunter did not enter an appearance in the suit filed by MRCB, while MRCB was represented by lawyer Selva Mookiah. In her grounds of judgment, Shoba said the company had proven its case against Hunter on a balance of probabilities, having established the four elements required to prove the tort of conspiracy. The court found that Hunter and Razak had repeatedly published and republished articles by one another, while Hunter had failed to verify the information contained in the reports before publication. Shoba also noted that Hunter did not issue any corrections to the articles despite the alleged inaccuracies. The court accepted testimony from two senior MRCB officers, which remained unchallenged due to Hunter’s absence during the proceedings. It further ruled that the company had suffered damage as a result of the publications and actions that were the subject of the lawsuit. The articles at the centre of the case concerned allegations surrounding the demolition and redevelopment of the Shah Alam Stadium. Separately, MRCB had earlier reached a settlement with Razak, securing a consent judgment in June.
