All injured in Sunway Lagoon mishap discharged from hospital, ride remains closed

KUALA LUMPUR — The rollercoaster at Sunway Lagoon Theme Park involved in a mishap remains closed pending investigations, while all those who were injured in the incident have been discharged from hospitals where they received treatment. The theme park operator said it continues to work closely with the relevant authorities and is providing its full cooperation throughout the investigation into the August 22 incident that resulted in 10 sustaining injuries. “We are pleased to confirm that all guests who were admitted to the hospital for further observation following the incident have now been discharged. “We recognise that the incident was distressing for those involved and caused understandable concern among their families. We sincerely regret what our guests experienced and remain in close contact with those affected to provide the necessary assistance and support,” the operator said in a statement. It also said it took seriously the safety concerns raised by the park’s guests and the wider public, adding that the rollercoaster remains closed while investigations are ongoing. Three days after the incident, Sunway Group founder Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah told the New Straits Times that the incident “may be attributable to metal fatigue”. The incident, which happened at night, was only reported to the police the following day.
