Families of Nepal-China flood victims can defer repayments: Bank Negara
Banks, insurance and takaful operators to extend further assistance, next-of-kin urged to engage with their financial service providers
KUALA LUMPUR — Repayment deferments have been grated to the families of victims in the Nepal-China floods, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said. The central bank said relevant banks and insurance and takaful operators (ITOs) have engaged with the affected families following BNM’s meeting with the victims’ next of kin on Oct 12, 2026. “Depending on the specific circumstances of the affected families, banks and ITOs are also considering further assistance, such as waivers of selected fees and charges, protection of customer assets and deposits, and facilitation of insurance/takaful claims. “Affected families are encouraged to continue engaging directly with their respective banks and ITOs. Should they require further assistance or clarification, they may reach out to their respective financial institution,” BNM said. BNM and the financial industry reiterated their readiness to extend appropriate relief and support to the victims’ families, in accordance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements. The central bank said it would continue to monitor the progress of these efforts. Fifty-four Malaysias remain missing in Rasuwa, Nepal, following massive flooding from a likely glacial collapse on August 26. Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said although the Nepal government had stopped search and rescue operations and had moved into the recovery phase, the Malaysian embassy in Kathmandu was still working with local authorities, trekking checkpoint and municipal officials to pursue any remaining leads. - October 22, 2026 The post Families of Nepal-China flood victims can defer repayments: Bank Negara appeared first on Scoop .
