Malaysia risks building more homes while Malaysians remain priced out, expert warns

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia could be heading towards a housing paradox – building more homes while ordinary Malaysians remain priced out – unless affordability is tackled through wages, construction costs, land prices and transport as one interconnected problem.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia property economics and finance expert Assoc Prof Dr Muhammad Najib Razali said Malaysia needed to move away from defining affordable housing simply by its selling price and instead measure whether households could sustainably afford a house based on their income and overall living costs.
